What is an HBCU, and is one right for you?

HBCUs are historically Black colleges and universities, founded to educate Black students and still doing that work today. They are not all the same. Some are small and private, some are large public research schools, some are best known for engineering, others for nursing, business, or the arts. The right one for you depends on your major, your budget, and the kind of place you want to spend four years.

Use the map and filters above to narrow the field, then open a school to see its strengths and the money tied to it. If you are weighing an HBCU against a predominantly white institution, our HBCU or PWI tool walks you through it honestly.
